tigerskinsandotherthings:

Yesterday morning, a Weibo user broke the news of a gruesome accident involving a tiger and a cleaner at a zoo in Yichun city, Jiangxi province.
According to Sohu, the keeper, surnamed Gong, was attacked by the animal at around 8:30 a.m. on March 27. Zoo employees rushed to drive the tiger away and injected it with anesthetic, while paramedics carried out the badly mauled body. Despite immediate medical treatment, the keeper was later pronounced dead.

Tencent reports that the animal was not yet “domesticated” and still had “wild animal” instincts, unlike all those tame tigers you find elsewhere…”

Erm…there’s no such thing as a “domesticated” tiger and it’s that thinking that gets people killed. Doesn’t matter if you hand-raise them and treat them like a pet, a tiger will always have it’s wild instincts and can attack at any time.

outdoor cats. lets talk about outdoor cats

i miss them. one of them was so friendly and she would always run up to you and meow and tell you a huge story and she would let you pet her forever. she was always really happy to see you, whoever you were, and i always looked forward to seeing her when i went in my backyard.

but whenever i pet her and talked to her, i always remembered how we lost our own friendly cat because he was allowed to be outdoors. and every time i visited with her i prayed she would be kept inside, even if it meant i couldn’t enjoy her company anymore.

so every next time i saw her my heart would sink because i knew she was at risk. and it would sink when we parted ways because i never knew if it was the last time we would meet.

now i will not be seeing her again.

the both of them are gone now because they were killed by coyotes. years and a month after our own cat was found half-eaten and disemboweled near our house. after other neighborhood cats disappeared.

our neighbors, like us at the time of our loss, thought it couldnt happen to them. even when they mourned for our own loss. we learned. we kept our remaining cat indoors.

they thought it couldnt happen to their cats. and it did.

even after the first one disappeared, they still insisted on letting their other outside. it couldnt possibly happen again.

and it did.

“BUT THEY LOVED THEM” my mom said when i expressed my hurt feelings that they let this happen, that they could have kept them inside and avoided this. especially after it happened to us, after we showed the idiocy that cost us a treasured companion.

because we too love our remaining cat. we keep her inside now. why didnt they?

“BUT THEY LOVED THEM SO MUCH THATS WHY"

predators dont care about your love and your bond to your companion animals. i argued this to her when we were still debating on whether to let our remaining cat out, or keep her indoors. i thank g-d every fucking day i hear about this happening, every single day, that we kept with that decision. our cat is indoor, and she is alive.

what a senseless waste of life. i am sick and sad that they are gone from willful ignorance and my tiny friend will never visit me again.

keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside. keep your cats inside.

if you love your cat, keep them inside. they dont have to be torn away from you. you are in control of their fate. they need your protection.

dont gamble with their life.

Not just cats but small dogs too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQbXSl1ReuQ

Literally the only thing that saved this Chi/Dachshund from being coyote food was its tether and its Rottweiler friend.

Per video description (bolded by me):”1. prior to this event no coyote sightings in this area
2. Dog was left outside by spouse while restroom was being used less than 5mins
3. This was 7am in morning ( not a normal time for a coyote / wild animal attack)
4. This is middle of city with no prior history

reblogging for this really important addendum^^^^

and my own: coyotes are ambush predators and both you and your pet are extremely unlikely to see an attack coming until it happens. when our cat was taken by one, he was outside for less than a minute. he literally walked around the side of our house and got grabbed. we heard him scream.

Shere Khan had stopped eating and was barely taking any of his meds. We knew this day was coming, and sadly, we had to make the decision to end his suffering.
His blood results in February indicated he had kidney disease. More blood was collected today to send to the lab for testing. His necropsy showed that he had advanced kidney disease and significant arthritis in his knee.
Thank you to everyone for helping us to give him nearly 20 years of happiness.

Rare Tigress ‘Poisoned’ to Death at Russian Wildlife Center

anythingfeline:

In a dramatic setback to Russian conservation efforts for the rare Amur tiger, an adult female is believed to have been poisoned to death at a wildlife rehabilitation center in the far-eastern Khabarovsk region, the center said in a statement, citing its director.

“It was a plant-based poison that breaks up into fragments upon entering the stomach. No matter how bizarre and sad this may sound, my opinion is unambiguous: the tigress was poisoned on purpose,” director Eduard Kruglov said in the statement, posted on the Utyos center’s website Friday.

Only a few hundred Amur tigers are estimated to roam their natural habitat in the mountains of Siberia and the Far East. The Utyos tigress died a month before she was scheduled to be released back into the wild.

An autopsy revealed that many of the tigress’s organs were “dark-colored,” a sign of poisoning, the statement said, and the director believes that the toxicant was mixed into the animal’s food.

“I’m not going to say who specifically could have done this, but I’m sure that there’s a certain group interested in this sort of thing,” he said. “This is the first such case in 20 years, and I hope nothing like this happens again.”

Three more tigers dead in wildlife reserves

tigersandcompany:

After being monitored for quite some time, a 14 year old tigress in Kanha National Park, has unfortunately passed away due to her old age.

In Bandhavgarh, two of the three cubs born to the Kankati tigress, were found dead, suspected to have been killed by a rival tiger. The surviving cub, a female, was taken to Satpura tiger reserve where she will be brought up in semi-wild conditions, until she is able to be released back into the wild.

Killing snakes doesn’t make you a hero, it makes you a coward.

If you are so scared of a pretty little hissy ribbon that you would shoot it with a shotgun, you then, need a lesson in courage.

Until a poisonous snake comes up to your child or pet…

This is also not a valid reason to take the snakes life. ^^^

I hear time and time again “What if you had children or pets.”  First, most people who aren’t extremely familiar with them misidentify snakes rather easily. I get calls about once a week to remove a “venomous” snake from someone’s house and the ONLY time in the last 3 years that it was actually venomous (an eastern coral snake) the person said “Yeah I think it’s a harmless cornsnake but I’m not sure.” So unless you work with or study them you run the risk of killing a harmless and possibly rare species.

Secondly,  No Venomous snake in the world actively hunts humans or (cat and dog-sized) animals. The snake would not see the creature as a food source and  has no reason to attack if not provoked. Now, understandably cats and dogs may try to kill the (snake) out of a hunting mentality, because they DO in fact hunt snakes, however, this would be the snake defending ITSELF. If you see your dog approach a venomous snake, call your dog to you and then call a professional to remove the snake. Over %80 of envenomations in the US come from people trying to KILL snakes.Often from trying to chase it around with a shovel and accidentally stepping on it. If you leave your dog alone in a wild area, that’s a risk you need to live with. You can’t go around on some kind of crusade killing all snakes because one MIGHT bits your dog or cat.

As for children, if they are old enough to understand the concept, teach them to never touch a snake, any snake, unless told by an expert that it’s ok. This will not only help save the life of the child but that of the snakes. Teach your children respect for the natural world as my parents taught me and you won’t have a problem.

If they are too young to understand that- THEN THEY ARE TOO GODDAM YOUNT TO LEAVE OUTSIDE UNSUPERVISED.
